Artist Information

Lucienne Day was one of the most celebrated and influential textile designers of the 20th century. With her husband, the furniture designer Robin Day, she pioneered the development of modern design in Britain after the War. Her best-known textile design ‘Calyx’ was launched at the Festival of Britain in 1951 and brought her international recognition, winning a Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale and the American Institute of Decorators’ award. In the following decades she worked for a variety of companies and her style was continually changing and developing, resulting in a hugely varied and versatile body of textile design. As well as furnishing fabrics, Lucienne Day designed surface patterns for wallpapers, carpets, ceramics and tea towels. In later years she created one-off fine art wall hangings termed ‘silk mosaics’. Lucienne Day died in 2010 aged 93.

Classic Textiles produce Lucienne Day ® textile designs under licence from the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation, the design education charity set up by Lucienne Day’s daughter Paula Day in 2012.
